Geo Literacy Certificate @ Dubai

Geo Literacy Certificate is designed to introduce educators to Google Earth and is meant as a starting point for beginners to explore basic features and possibilities. Geo Literacy is described as the “ability to use geographic understanding and geographic reasoning to make far-reaching decisions”. There are 7 modules in this certificate course. Each module will include an introduction to the tool(s) and include time for practice and application. To earn the certificate, teachers complete all activities and will create a classroom-ready resource using Google Earth and other Geo Tools that they can use with their particular group of students.

Limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

Who is it for?

This Certificate is for Educators and coaches across all content areas and age groups who are new to Google Earth (or don’t feel it’s applicable to them) as well as those who are familiar but want to learn more and think bigger. There’s something here for everyone!

Description

National Geographic and Google Earth explain that geo literacy is “a new term for a long-standing idea consisting of three components: interactions, interconnections and implications. It is the ability to use geographic understanding and geographic reasoning to make far-reaching decisions.” In other words, geo literacy is about much more than the where of mapping and geography, though that is key. It’s about the why of making sense of our world around us in a way that sparks change. It’s about connecting with our surroundings in meaningful ways and looking at everything that happens through a geo lens.

Teachers of any content area and age group can utilize the incredible features built within Google Earth and other Geo Tools to help students engage with the world around them, near and far. This Certificate will explore some of the basics of what Google Earth is, how teachers can use it frequently in their classroom to inspire their students, and why geo literacy skills are as important as ever to instill. We hope you feel wowed and inspired!

Workshop Goals and Objectives

Participants who complete all seven modules and earn the certificate will:

  • have a working knowledge of geo literacy and its importance and applications in the classroom
  • explore basic features of Google Earth, Google Maps, My Maps, Street View, Google Cardboard, and Tour Builder
  • determine types of activities that can incorporate Google Earth frequently in his/her specific classroom setting
  • enjoy “sandbox” time to play with and explore tools, e.g. session will have Google Cardboards and a 360° camera to practice with
  • create a classroom-ready resource using Google Earth and related tools to use with his/her students
  • reflect on how geo tools can help inspire global thinkers

What will be covered in certificate modules?

Modules

1- Geo Literacy: The What and the Why

Before we introduce tools, this module will lay an important foundation that explores what geo literacy is and why it matters (or should matter) to us and our students.

Participants will:

  • Define geo literacy
  • Look at examples of how geo literacy is (and isn’t) being used in classrooms
  • Explore possibilities to strengthen geo literacy awareness

2 – Google Earth: Exploring the World Around Us

We will dive in (digitally underwater in some cases) to visualize and virtually explore. This module will cover basic features and functions using better-than-ever Google Earth. 

Participants will:

  • Discuss what Google Earth is and what makes it such a powerful tool
  • Explore 5 basic features of Google Earth: search, knowledge cards, 3D rendering, Voyager Stories, and Feeling Lucky.
  • Take a sample quiz in Google Earth
  • Create a classroom-ready resource using Google Earth

 

 3 – Collaborative Mapping: Visualize and Share Data with Google Maps and My Maps

This module will cover basic features within Google Maps. We’ll look at ways to use this powerful tool to connect with our surroundings (beyond mere driving directions). Then, we’ll use My Maps to create collaborative maps using shapes, data sets, measurements, and icons and aim to build geographical awareness.

Participants will:

  • Discuss the purposes and basic features of Google Maps and My Maps
  • Learn how to embed and share images from Google Maps
  • See an example of how mapping public data can spark local change
  • Create a collaborative map in My Maps and import a data set
  • Generate an idea of a classroom activity using what we’ve learned

4 – 360° imagery: Create Immersive Experiences with Street View

This module will introduce the beauty and possibilities of 360° imagery. Using the Street View app and desktop site, we will leave the walls of our classroom and quite literally immerse ourselves in remote locations. Participants will have hands-on time using a Ricoh Theta-S 360 camera to capture and publish 360° images.

Participants will:

  • Use Street View desktop site and mobile app to explore 360° images and galleries
  • “Visit” a virtual location
  • Learn how to create a 360° image and publish it to Street View
  • Brainstorm possible applications and activities in the classroom

 

5 – Google VR: Discover the World through Virtual Reality

This module will look at some key features of Virtual Reality and what it could bring to your classroom. We’ll try out Google Cardboard and see how near-impossible experiences can become up close and personal for our students. Building on what we’ve learned in Module 3, we’ll examine examples of VR video and imagery and how it can help us think bigger.  

Participants will:

  • Learn how to use Google Cardboard
  • Be introduced to Google Expeditions and YouTube 360
  • Explore examples of how other classrooms are using these tools
  • Brainstorm possible applications and activities in your classroom

6 – Storytelling: Build and Share Stories using Tour Builder

Let’s tell stories! Stories keep us connected to the world around us and are interesting. Tour Builder is a beta tool that blends what we’ve learned so far about maps with storytelling. In this module, we’ll practice telling a story by creating our own tour. We’ll also dip into Story Spheres as a way to take what we’ve learned with 360° imagery up a notch.

Participants will:

  • Examine examples of tours and Story Spheres that have been created
  • Learn the basics of Tour Builder and try creating a tour
  • Explore how to create a Story Sphere
  • Brainstorm possible applications and activities in your classroom

 

7 – Global Thinkers: Reflect on where we are and what’s next using Google Earth Engine

This module will tie everything we’ve learned together and provide time to reflect on next actions. We’ll briefly explore Google Earth Engine and its geospatial analysis using satellite images. How will these tools become even more valuable to our students as time goes on? How can engaging with the world visually inspire change? What can we do to help our students to better care for their world and future?

Participants will:

  • View examples of change over time using Google Earth Engine
  • Discuss key takeaways from previous modules and determine next actions
  • Discuss ways geo literacy can inspire students to be global thinkers
  • Share what activities we have liked, created and thought of during these modules

SESSION LEADER

Gretel Patch has reared her four children in five countries so far and is a global nomad at heart. Passionate about where technology and education meet, Gretel enjoys working with students and teachers in a variety of settings. She holds a Masters of Educational Technology and a Technology Integration Specialist graduate certificate from Boise State University, and a BA in Communications from Brigham Young University. In 2013 she was selected to attend the Google Teacher Academy in Sydney and is a Google Certified Innovator and Google Earth Education Expert.

She has worked at Lincoln School in Nepal as a K-12 technology integration coordinator and in Virginia as a communications specialist for Falls Church City schools. She was presented in Washington, D.C. with the Secretary of State Award for Outstanding Volunteerism Abroad for her technology outreach efforts with disadvantaged Nepali students. Gretel has presented at ISTE, ASB Unplugged, Google Apps for Education summits, online conferences, and various professional development efforts. She served on the parent Research and Development committee at the American School of Bombay, ASB Board’s Council of Advisors and the Principal’s Advisory Committee, and as an ASB Online Academy instructor. She is a literacy grant recipient from Phi Kappa Phi and shared STEAM activities with disadvantaged girls in Mumbai.
